Branding & Marketing Claims

  • A Somerset founding story can make the whole range feel locally made when the mainstream supply chain is global.
  • The 2017 UK unit is real, but it was not a return of the historic factory network.
  • Clarks said the existing Vietnam and India supply chain would continue.

Clarks is woven into the story of British footwear. Somerset was not merely a registered address; it was a place where shoe patterns, cutting rooms and production skills grew together over generations. The Desert Boot became a world-famous object because a British company knew how to design, make and sell shoes at scale. That achievement deserves respect. So does the workforce that made it possible.

But the factory story changed. Production moved to the Far East in 2005, and the last remaining UK plant at Millom closed in 2006. The return of a robot-assisted manufacturing unit to Street in 2017 is worth acknowledging, but it is not the return of the old Clarks manufacturing network. The company itself said the Vietnam and India supply chain would continue.

That distinction is vital for anyone trying to buy British. A small domestic line can exist alongside a much larger overseas supply chain. The existence of one British-made Desert Boot does not turn every Clarks shoe into a British-made shoe, just as the Somerset origin story does not tell you where the pair in your hands was made.

The answer is not to sneer at every Clarks product. The answer is to become harder to market to. Find the exact model, read its origin information and ask what proportion of the work happened here. If you want a 100% British-made shoe or boot, seek out a maker willing to explain its leather, soles, cutting, stitching and finishing—not merely a historic brand with a famous birthplace.
