Official Portal for Verified British Independent Enterprises
Raleigh bicycles are designed and distributed through Nottingham but manufactured overseas.
At its peak, Raleigh’s Nottingham factories covered 60 acres and employed 10,000 British workers, turning British steel tubing into millions of Choppers, Burners and roadsters. It was the largest bicycle manufacturing centre in the world.
Frame production in Nottingham ended in 1999, followed by the closure of the final assembly lines in 2002. Raleigh is now part of the Netherlands-based Accell Group. The Nottingham address remains a distribution, parts and customer service hub, but the bicycles bearing the heron badge are welded, painted and assembled in factories overseas.
The loss of Raleigh’s industrial core left a generation of skilled framebuilders, braziers and mechanics to rebuild British cycling culture from small independent workshops.
If you want a bicycle crafted by British hands, support the bespoke independent framebuilders and bike workshops listed in the Britain Direct directory who continue the tradition of Reynolds steel fabrication on British workbenches.
