Branding & Marketing Claims

  • The "Wedgwood England 1759" stamp implies British origin for pieces made abroad.
  • The Barlaston visitor experience is used to promote a brand whose mainstream output is Indonesian.
  • Backstamps often omit origin countries or use vague "Designed in England" phrases.

The bottle kilns and brickworks of Stoke-on-Trent gave the world Jasperware, fine bone china, and tableware fit for palaces. Wedgwood is one of the foundational names in the history of the Industrial Revolution.

Following the collapse of Waterford Wedgwood in 2009 and subsequent acquisition by Fiskars in 2015, the mainstream product lines were shifted to a massive production facility in Banyan, Indonesia. A small, high-craft studio remains in Barlaston, but the plates, cups, and bowls filling department store shelves across the UK are largely produced overseas.

The Wedgwood name carries a prestige built over 260 years of Staffordshire clay, heat, and glaze. When that name is placed on goods made 7,000 miles away, it trades on Stoke’s reputation without sustaining the local potteries that earned it.

Independent British potters, ceramicists, and family kilns still fire authentic British clay across the UK. Look for the backstamp, check where the piece was thrown and fired, and support the working potters of Britain.
