Branding & Marketing Claims

  • The iconic octagon emblem and British motoring history are front-and-centre in marketing.
  • London design studio presence is frequently highlighted while factory assembly remains in China.
  • Longbridge heritage is invoked even though domestic assembly ceased in 2016.

The octagon badge on an MG steering wheel used to mean something very simple: Abingdon-on-Thames, British sports cars, affordable fun and a lineage that ran straight through British motorsport and production. Later it meant Longbridge. Today the badge has survived, but the industrial spine that gave the badge its meaning has moved across the world.

MG is now an operating subsidiary of SAIC Motor, the Chinese state-owned automotive giant. Current MG models are built in China, supported by design centres in London and Shanghai. Vehicle production at Longbridge ended in 2016. What remains in Britain is design input, marketing and a dealer network—not mass automotive assembly.

There is no need to pretend modern MGs are poorly built or irrelevant. They sell in large numbers because they are competitively priced electric and petrol cars. The issue is whether a historic badge can be used to disguise the reality of modern vehicle production.
